Don’t worry, it seems law abiding civil servants are ‘confused’ too. As a result the chief secretary of the Treasury, Danny Alexander, discovered in May 2012 that over 2,400 civil servants earning £58,200 each per annum have been ‘off payroll’ for more than 10 years. Because of the IR35 regulations it seems they have over stepped the guide lines and, therefore, may be liable for hefty penalty paybacks.
There is obviously a valuable lesson to be learnt here – if chief execs in senior positions can get this wrong, what chance does the general average Joe have?
