FSB calls for small business export support

7th October 2019

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has urged the Government to offer financial assistance to small businesses exporting after Brexit.

The business group called on the Department for International Trade and the Treasury to introduce export vouchers of up to £3,000, for small businesses to put towards "a range of costs".

These could include the costs of translation services, market research, and overseas trade fairs.

Around 21% of small firms currently export, but the FSB says it believes that figure could double with Government support.

Mike Cherry, chairman of the FSB, said:

"Exporting is a critical part of the British economy, especially to small firms hoping to expand and grow their businesses.

"But in order to succeed, it's time that the Government stepped in and gave small firms the help that they need in order to realise their exporting ambitions."

Cherry added that the Government should publish its revised UK tariff schedule that would apply in the event of a no-deal Brexit "as a matter of urgency", to allow small businesses to prepare.
